It’s probably that you have crappy seed. Part of my lawn was re-seeded by a contractor that did patio work this spring. And as you can see it’s dying and looks crappy despite me taking good care of it. The other grass is seed I planted myself and you can see the difference, even though both grasses are next to eachother and get the same treatment and watering. Zone 5b

So you’re not gonna share what brand of grass seed you bought? Nice.
So don’t go for the seed that’s 50% weeds and 50% shit, got it.
Its also possible that they don’t have deep enough top soil around the patio.
My paver walk way has that issue. Theres a strip next to it that always dies. I first blamed the sprinklers for not giving proper coverage. But even after adjusting those, I still ran into the issue.
Then I dug out the crab grass this year to start fresh and discovered its about 6 inches of top soil, then just crushed stone below it that was used as part of the base for the walkway.
Rather than making the base tight, they spread it with some wiggle room of a few inches wider than the walk way. Then put their sand in. Then the pavers on top, then backfilled with top soil.
So now that grass can’t get the deep roots like the rest of the yard and its soil is much warmer causing it to die faster.
This likely has more to do with heat being absorbed by the patio and damaging the nearby grass than it has to do with being a “different” seed. Cheap seed will either have a lot of weeds or it won’t germinate well, the contractor didn’t cheap out on seed by getting you a variety that is less heat tolerant.
He bought generic seed
I reseeded this year in a spot that had a bunch of soil washed away last year during my initial seed. I used the same bag of seed and weeds germinated only in the new area. I don’t think it was the seed that was the problem, it was that a bunch of weed seeds took hold in the soil before the grass could dominate. Either way I just pulled the weeds, fed the grass, and now it’s thick and crowds all the weeds out. Strong grass keeps weeds away.
What kind of grass did you use?
My lawn looks like crap every summer. The spring and fall it’s thick n green.
Lmfao.
Hear hear! He probably used a mix that was loaded with perennial and annuals
You sir are incorrect. The concrete heats the soil.
My guess is there’s a bunch of shit and construction debris under that grass
