Hi, I’ve lived here 5 years, this is the first time it flooded like this. It was a flash flood warning. I know I have some serious work to do once it stops. Filling the washed away yard and repairing the wall. Any tips for how to do this? Should I put rock down before dirt on top? Please be nice 🙂
The water isn’t supposed to flow over that concrete 🤣, it usually follows underneath the concrete to the left but you can see it’s just overflowing before it goes under. This is after it calmed down.

You’re going to need a professional. A lot of places have specific requirements regarding waterways, plus you need a wall taller than 4ft to prevent this from happening again. An engineer will be able to figure out the best plan and get permits.
Built in water feature!
My rule of thumb has always been to never live near a river, stream, creek or brook and always live on the high side of the slope. I have passed up many otherwise amazing properties, but I have never been flooded.
Well at least now you have waterfront property!
But in all seriousness, this is way beyond DIY. You need a professional.
I so wish I had something like this in my front yard!!
well. . . iffin the crick don’t rise again you can fix it!
It doesn’t look like there is much of a riparian buffer here. Maybe get some plants and shrubs that are able to have intermittent wet feet. I’ve had a lot of success with button bush in these situations. I manage a small wetland at the school I teach in. Erosion was a major issue. I planted button bush along the borders. After 5 years. It seems to be making a pretty good difference.
Should have used Flex Seal! Available at all major retailers. Flex Seal a screen door so you have a boat for that river.
BUILD THE WALL
it’s pronounced Crick!!!
That looks natural, just because it doesn’t flow yearly doesn’t mean it won’t. You should make it a natural creek bed that’s dry most of the time. People build in places they shouldn’t.
Make a pond and get some fish and have a moment of zen cause fighting Mother Nature is exhausting
As everyone else said, you need a professional. You don’t fight water, you work with it. The water will always win.
lol Why is there a random wall redirecting the flow of water towards the house ?
Lean into it, install channels so that next time the water has somewhere to go other than your yard. That’s what I would do anyways.
100% time to french drain into the neighbors yard
What is that massive wall on left side of channel? It may be to prevent damage to the bank but its pushing all the water towards tour property. Certainly needs a bit if e pert guidance to help fix this but I would love this as a project. Mrs would never see me so win win!
This won’t be a DIY fix. There are ground stability issues to prevent land slides. Landslide mitigation strategy while work is being performed etc. and then there is actually calculating a 1 in 250 year event and exceeding that design requirement.
These are the type of projects laymen take on and get themselves killed with because they don’t understand the forces at play.
A few early steps you will probably want to consider is to get a few larger boulders and situate them at the head of the wall on the right at the beginning of the video. That will help to split and slow the flow and deflect it away from the stacked stone of the wall that will then be behind it.
On the wall to the left at the beginning of the video probably one smaller boulder type stone along with about 40 or so stones between grapefruit and small pumpkin size, these will be scattered in front of the boulder and to the left to disturb the water and blunt the force of it directing it back over to the right.
Once the water has died back to a trickle find out what has been carried down and caught under the wall that water normally flows under. That by itself is a significant concern because a large flat surface like that and is partially undercut for water flow is going to receive a significant amount of pressure. If it wasn’t built with rebar anchored into bedrock or some kind of solid footing well below it the water will be prone to splitting or toppling it under similar circumstances.
Where the water has been cascading down in a waterfall like way, you need to stack put a base of river rock and peddle in and then a few larger stones, perhaps a larger tree branch of trunk portion that is canoed out to act as a gutter and way to slow the water so it doesn’t continue to hit straight down undercutting those areas as it carries soil away from splashing and erosion.
Keep the water fall even if you have to redirect the creek or pull a water feed off of it.
I love these small waterfalls.

Your simply in its way🤨
This ain’t flooding in the yard from creek,
This is Creek in the yard from flooding.
A Russian waterway
And boy is it Russian
Strong color choice on those crocks
Yea. That can happen when you buy a home near a creek.
I think it looks neat, people pay good money for that
I would start with talking to the folks who manage storm water runoff in that area, find out what happened and so forth.
I see a couple things.
1. This looks like a natural floodplain. Have you checked the 100-year flood plan in your area? Check to see if it encompasses the spread of this creek.
2. I’m jealous as hell. I wish I had running water by my property. 🙁
Looks like your backyard was built on a creek
How is no one talking about this person wearing crocs and socks in the water…
“I’m the creek now”
When in doubt always willow tree!
Man, I wish I had a front yard creek!
This looks (at least mostly) intentional?
I would think this was cool as hell but I realize that’s not the point, lol.
It’s likely gonna be something that requires professional care because as you’ve just seen, water does whatever it wants to do if you aren’t basically perfect at channeling it.
Yeah that’s not flooding that’s just a creek
Your yard IS the creek, lol. Get an engineer. You need a mini excavator. This would be a fun project imo.
I suggest big rocks.
We had the same issue on a new house we bought. Sellers didn’t disclose flooding but anyways… hire a civil engineer. They will be able to solve your problem the first time around, correctly.
Get a beaver, build a float home. Problem solved
I don’t see a yard – only the creek. It is creek now.
