Raise your hand if you remember a plant this size going for t h o u s a n d s of dollars during the pandemic! Now just $60 at Lowe’s thanks to Costa Farms. Couldn’t believe I passed it up (I actually prefer the non-variegated version), so had to share somewhere!

$60?! They’re $150 at the Lowe’s in my neighborhood. Only two stores in the region got them.

Because of the pet reptile industry (specifically ball pythons) yes, I can.

Something so prolific cannot possibly be gatekept by those who first created/found them for long. Once everyone starts making their own, the population explodes and the price plummets.

There are ball pythons which cost $100k 20 years ago which go for $200 now.

Yeah they were new, rare, and popular at the time, hence high demand from everyone obsessing over them online compared with the very low supply, sent prices into orbit.

However with something like this all you need to do is wait for a few years and all those propagations that were being cultivated like crazy at the time have now come into their own, supply for the large ones is now at what the demand was in 2020, and demand is less, so prices can level out 🙂

    Patience is rewarded!

I paid 70 or 80€ for mine last year, a little smaller than those in the picture. It then took a heavy hit due to thrips and my attempt to introduce growlights. It has two leaves left and looks rather sad. Last week I saw similar Thai Cons for 20€ in the local nursery 🥲 I’m so tempted to go back and get one.

Reminder that Costa farms has absolutely illegal working conditions, there’s been several writ ups on this sub about them (a quick search will yield the main posts), and their practices should not be supported with your hard earned money! It’s good that the hobby becomes accessible to smaller wallets, but that should not be at the expense of workers writes and living conditions 🙂
