The Plantation Garden Trust submitted plans to Norwich City Council to extend the 10-ft high fence along the eastern boundary of the garden by an additional 219 feet.

The trust said the extension would help prevent intruders from accessing the area from Unthank Road where they could scale the 5.5ft brick wall to enter the garden.

In its application, the Trust said CCTV footage revealed several occasions when the wall had been scaled.

Its statement said: “Footage from CCTV cameras on Plantation House show people frequently crossing the wall, including a group that entered on New Year’s Eve to let off fireworks in the garden.”

It then continued: “Events like these, along with the honesty box being broken into five times, have made it clear we need a more secure boundary.”
