Total newbie here. I want to grow the left side branch of this Crape Myrtle to be more symmetrical with the rest of the tree. It would be nice if the left-side branch can grow straight up without interfering too much with other branches.
So how do I trim it in winter? And do I need to use wire to keep the left-side branch growing straight up?

Thin the branches on the sunny side. This will let more light through to the shady side and encourage those limbs to grow
I don’t top off my Crape Myrtles. I let them grow and early in the spring I cut off any suckers coming up from the bottom. I would not use wire to tie it, use some cloth or what they sell for staking trees.
