Northview, the NWT’s largest landlord, is moving ahead with plans to rebuild at the site of Yellowknife’s former Garden Townhomes.

A dozen units burnt down in 2023 after an electrical fire at the complex off 50 Avenue, near the city’s downtown.

The new development is indicated by a sign outside the property telling residents that contractor Arcan Construction has applied for a permit to begin building.

Colleen Wellborn, the regional director for Northview in the NWT, confirmed an application had been filed to rebuild at the Garden Townhomes site.

Wellborn told Cabin Radio the proposed building will be roughly the same as the previous one, consisting of 12 three-bedroom townhomes.

From 2024: What caused the Garden Townhomes fire?

The City of Yellowknife told Cabin Radio the units will be split into rows of six homes back to back, similar to the previous design.

A timeline for construction was not provided. The application is still in the review process at City Hall.
