Harbor springs, Michigan. I know plenty of plants evolved to grow in or near sand but seeing milkweed straight up thriving in beach sand was very entertaining to me. 😅 Also props to Harbor Springs for having milkweed EVERYWHERE and even mixed into regular landscaping!

I’ve also seen new england aster growing in beach sand, which was surprising!
If it’s anything like my common milkweed, they started out with one or two and a few years later it was everywhere!
OMG we were at Oval Beach last week and it was COVERED in milkweed on the dunes just like that! It also entertained me 😂
Sand is great for growing a lot of things

Growing up through my driveway
Milkweed’s niche appears to be as a pioneering colonizer of disturbed habitat. It can only grow around the perimeter of my prairie planting and will not compete with the rich grass/ forb plant community.
They’re on vacation!
