I just recently moved into this home and one thing that’s been bugging me is that the grass isn’t uniform. What can I do to fix this? Thank you!

  1. I am no expert, but it looks like 2 different types of grass.

Hard to tell exactly from this high up, but it sure looks like the two shades of green are two different types of grass. It kind of looks like the darker shade is KBG or maybe a fescue, while the light green is that very soft, short, clumping grass. Again, hard to tell from your pic but I don’t think the shades are from disease; seems more likely to be different species.

Try providing a closer view or even pulling out a dark green grass from the root and showing it next to an uprooted light green grass.

I have the same problem. Mine is brown and browner. 😂

Did it green up at the same time? I think the lighter might be annual poas

Just a guess here. Could the lighter colored grass be bentgrass? Can you pull it out in clumps?

  6. Appreciate the replies all. If this is indeed two (three?) different types of grass, is there any way to make it all uniform? I’m a complete lawncare rookie.

Different types of grass. I’m guessing the lighter green is Bermuda. I hate Bermuda.

  8. majority of it kinda looks like creeping bentgrass

    2 types of grass.

I’m in Atlanta and have a mid of Bermuda and fescue since one will grow in the hot sun and the other thrives in the shade near the house and by the trees/under the kids playset; and where they meet looks like this. With the Bermuda slowly taking over like it likes to do lol

I’m in 6b too. It’s been hot the last couple of weeks but overall a mild spring. My yard has a lot of this as well…I’m not sure if it is some of weeds like poa that haven’t died off yet or different grass types(or both). If you are planning an overseed this fall make sure you select a quality grass seed and don’t switch year to year. Eventually your newly seeded grass will smooth some of this out.

If that’s how it’s looking amidst the extreme heat we have been having, I’d be pretty happy with that!

That’s how northern lawns are, for the most part. You’ve got 5 or 6 different greens there that I’m seeing, and there’s no good way for me to say what it all is, but it’s different grass types mostly that are giving you the colour variation.

    Grasses you might want:

    Kentucky bluegrass

    Perennial ryegrass

    Turf type tall fescue

Fine fescues (creeping red, chewings, hard, etc.)

    Grasses you might not want:

Clumping tall fescue (some people plant this in their lawn on purpose)

Creeping bent grass (putting greens use this. Not desirable to be mixed with other lawn grasses)

    Poa annua

    Johnson grass

    Crabgrass

The list of possibilities goes on…

Anyway, either you could nuke it and start over, or do a few seasons of overseeding and slowly weave the patchiness into something you’re happier with by adding better grass and crowding the old stuff out, basically.

It’s growing, so that’s always good.

Usually two different types of grass unfortunately.

  14. Different grass types. If you want a uniform lawn you would have to renovate from scratch…round up multiple times and slice seed with the turf type of your liking. OR you can aerate and over seed which will be cheaper but will take some time to crowd out the existing grass.

The lighter color is a weed grass that is outcompeting your lawn. Without a closeup I’d guess creeping bentgrass or nimblewill based on the bluish color.

Tbh it’s all nice and green. It looks kinda cool. Your grass is vibin out there.

Leave your salad lawn for this season, kill it off at the end of the year, reseed in early spring

OP get close ups of the different spots. Looks like bent grass and blue grass from afar.
