Growing plants like cucumbers, squash, melons, and pumpkins in your #homegarden is so fun…but these plants can take up a lot of precious space. Growing plants vertically or under taller plants (similar to the Three Sisters Method) can not only save garden space, but can reduce disease and weeds! #gardening #gardentips #verticalgarden #companionplanting #gardendesign #backyardgarden #gardenideas
here’s how I save garden space when growing large vining plants Growing vertically not only saves space but it can increase air flow reducing things like powdery mildew Most of these vining plants will have tendrils that will reach out and grab onto the supports Cucumbers are a great plant to grow this way but there’s lots of other ones you can grow as well For example these are gourds and yard long beans Just know if you grow something that has heavier fruit you might need to add a support as that fruit gets larger Another way I save space is to grow vining plants under taller or vertically grown plants For example this is butternut squash growing under tomatoes This will help shade the soil and keep down weed growth I’m also growing some melons underneath of my peppers This will fill out all those empty spaces really well And remember only the roots of the vining plants need to be in the soil So you can let them spill out of raised beds or containers onto the ground or patio just like I did with this volunteer pumpkin

Great !! I love the idea that you grow other crops underneath too.🤭
Gourds plus yard long beans is an excellent idea
Thank you 😊
