Last two shots are right after closing the home. Located in mid Michigan, hardiness zone 5b. The previous owner did not care at all and let the neighbor to mow.

A first home owner and novice in lawncare. Purchased battery operated mower/string trimmer/leaf blower, manual weed puller/shovel/rake/cultivator, garden hose (no sprinkler or irrigation), wondering if I am missing any tools or mowing method

Home suburbs like these make me feel uncomfortable, lawn needs seeding and more water, cut high don’t scalp.

It looks like you’re mowing too short. Set your mower on one of the tallest settings available. This alone will make all the difference.

  3. I’m in the Ann Arbor area, and built a home in sub. Our lawn is 3 year old sod. I have heavy clay and watering is most important. Equipment does not matter. I also have a battery mower (Ryobi) and it’s great for maneuverability. I mow once a week unless we enter a heavy drought season. Luckily Michigan has had a heavier than usual rainfall. I would opt for a core aeration and overseed in the fall and thatch in the spring with an additional overseed. I made the mistake of thinking my yard is only 3 seasons old and did not work as hard as I should to keep it up. Takes effort to keep it up 👍🏻
