Hello fellow lawn care fanatics,
Checking in from Wisconsin. Like many of you, I take a lot of pride in having the best-looking lawn I can — thick, plush, with straight stripes that glisten when the sun hits them just right.

But as we all know, sometimes life happens: dogs, kids, pools, play sets… all the things that make a house a home can also keep that picture-perfect lawn just out of reach.

For me, pee spots were always the enemy. I knew the deal — if you want a flawless lawn, either don’t get a dog or keep him off of it. And this spring and summer, because we were hosting a lot at our place, I was especially strict. I kept my dog off the lawn much of the time, making sure he did his business in a spot away from the main yard.

But after unexpectedly having to say goodbye to my almost 10-year-old German Shepherd last Friday, I’d give anything to go back. I wish I hadn’t been so worried about the lawn.

Today I mowed for the first time since losing him. As nice as the yard looks, it doesn’t feel rewarding — because I find myself missing those pee spots.

More than that, I just miss my dog.

What’s your dog’s name? I’d like to tell mine about him

I miss my dog terribly. The exact only thing I don’t miss is my dead lawn.

🥺😢 I, too, make my dog pee on a spot that isn’t the main yard and now I’m going to hug him

have a puppy- first dog of my own. the pee spots have been a slight headache the last month or so, but she makes every burnt blade entirely worth it

Yards are meant to be used/enjoyed. As you said, that’s part of what makes it a home, the memories you create using the space.

How many people are not going to come to your house because of a couple urine burn spots, or some weeds?

Some people in this sub can’t see for the forest for the trees unfortunately.

Very good point. I love a perfect lawn, but I love my dog more.

The day after my dog passed I remember poop scooping the yard the last time and thinking how it’s normally a chore but now I wanted to savor it.

Lost my bud on June 6. The pee spots have just cleared up. I miss my little man. Sorry for your loss OP.

Ya my lawn looks gorgeous now and I hate it.

    RIP little guy.

Exactly. Our dog is 14 years old. Diabetic. Deaf and blind. He brings so much joy to our lives. Follows me everywhere I go in the house. I’m enjoying each and every day I have with him.

    Sorry to hear.

My girl does a decent job peeing on the mulch spots, but a few times a year I need to fix the spots. Part of the deal and I’m sure I’ll miss the extra work when she’s gone

Growing up we used to play baseball in the backyard daily and of course we would kill the grass at the “pitchers” mound and home plate. My dad kept a very decent lawn. He would just have us move 10 feet back and plant more grass seed every year where we played. I don’t think he was ever mad and hopefully enjoyed us kids to be able use the big back yard that we had in the neighborhood. Now I keep a very nice lawn of my own and sometimes my wife will ask of the occasional soccer or other activity that could damage the lawn I just shrug and say it will grow back. Lawns are not to be perfect but played on. RIP to your friend.

Truer words have been spoken. Every once in a while it’s not a big deal to step in a land mind.

  16. I totally understand what you mean. My old house had a beautiful yard. This yard unfortunately is smaller and I didn’t close off the dog area. However, my Tiffany 419 looks like shit. However, my best friend was laid to rest two years ago. My female GSD is 12 and I don’t give a fuck how the yard looks. As long as I have her for the time that remains. Because I would give anything to have my boy back. Hopefully our four legged friends are talking about us and how they used to have a favorite pee spot. 😂 🌈🌉🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺

I am sorry for your loss. We lost our last good girl a year and a half ago and I still weep when I find her hair while cleaning in the house or garage.

  18. I had to put my dog down last Fall and still can’t bring myself to reseed his favorite spot. At the time, it always irked me that he couldn’t at least spread it around a little lol now, I’d do anything to have him here peeing in that dang spot again.

Yes. My dog runs the grass out along the fence. I don’t care. He can do whatever in HIS yard. I keep up the best I can but it’s his space. If he digs. He digs.

Yeah our yard is screwed I gave up. Thank you for reminding that it’s ok not to care

  21. Thanks for reminding me to cherish my time with my pup. I’m sorry for your loss, I know it’s hard, but know that you helped others (and their pups) find more joy as a result, and it’s a wonderful gift to give in your time of grief, and I wish you all the best

Lost my 14yo (would’ve been 15 in August) exactly 1 month ago. It’s really hard man. Sorry for your loss.

  23. TeaWithKermit

Ohhh, buddy. I’m so sorry. What heartbreak. I’m sorry that you lost him so young. It hurts like hell.
Thanks for the reminder about what’s actually important. Yards are meant to be used and enjoyed by all.
