I bought this cotoneaster starter in 2022 from [Eric Schrader / Bonsaify](https://www.bonsaify.com/collections/bonsai-for-sale/products/cotoneaster-mini-bonsai-starters) (not a sponsor or anything I just really like his stock & even though it’s a little pricey for what it is, the roots are consistently *so* much better than similar material from like $0.99 FB auctions, I’m a fan)
(Edit- that 2023 photo is the earliest I have of it, it was the first repot & hard cut back from the stock and not how I received it)

Really enjoy the view in the 3rd shot!
I think cotoneaster (specifically the small leaf varieties) are really great for bonsai. They can take a beating, have great branching, and cuttings root if you so much as look at them.
Had one I really liked a couple years back that I nuked with fertilizer. Super bummed about it still but, I went digging around at my favorite nursery (where I got the first one) and found a new one. It’s got a good double trunk base to start from.
I gave it a pretty hard pruning today. This photo isn’t great but, I left enough healthy growth that I’m sure this lil dude will be fine. This thing was about double the height and it was almost all scraggly angular branches just under pencil thin which are all cuttings now. Gonna give this one a repot into a box next spring.
With any luck, I will also be able to embark upon a 45 tree forest with all the cuttings
Oh, I also found a nursery tag on this one. The specific cultivar is Cotoneaster dammeri ‘Skogholm’. I thought it was Microphyllus but it seems to be slightly different. Having looked at the two side by side at the nursery is starting to make me think maybe dammeri is more prone to producing less than 3000 trunks? Either way, just thought I’d share.

Currently in a container by [Karin Kohler / Little Pots by KK](https://www.instagram.com/littlepotsbykk?igsh=MW9uem04NGh2MGFxag==). This is such a solid species, if you’re not already growing it then you definitely should!
