At first someone told me it was Crabgrass so I was spraying for that. Then recently someone told me it's Nutsedge or Johnson grass. Everything I've done up to this point for pre/post germination is not working and both my back and front yards are getting over ran by it. What can I use to help kill it off?

I’d give hand pulling a try. What type of lawn do you have? Celsius WG is fantastic, but I have St. Augustine in Louisiana – not sure if it’d be appropriate with cool season grass.

Dude if that’s Johnson grass Tenacity will suppress. There is only one way to truly get rid of it. Glyphosate it and replant. The roots and rizhomes are very deep
From the pictures that looks like J grass. I own a lawn care company for 30 years and that stuff sucks

It’s clearly not nutsedge. Nutsedge isn’t nearly this wide, it doesn’t grow like this, has shinier leaves, etc. Just because it’s green doesn’t make it nutsedge.

I’m going with Johnsongrass. You can see that prominent white mid vein in the picture above. It has wide leaves and is growing pretty tall.

Your options are pretty limited, but it growing a lot taller than your lawn helps. You can try pulling, but you have to make sure you get all the roots or it’ll just come back. Other option is glyphosate, and you can put it just on the weed leaves. Paint brush, nilesandstuff method, or what I have good experience with being [the lawn liberetor](https://www.nicegreenlawn.com). I used it to get rid of dallisgrass last year and quackgrass this year without damage to my lawn. For what you have in the picture here, wouldn’t take but five min or so.

  4. Not nutsedge. Johnson grass or Dallisgrass. Pull or Glyphosate. Not easy to deal with.

you have big grass growing in your little grass!! just run around on it a bunch, do some cartwheels and tackle football.. it’ll all even out.

This time of the year, definitely not Nut sedge, albeit, they do look alot alike.

I got had loads of this stuff when I bought my current property in 2020. Quinchlorac did a fantastic job killing it, and a pre-emergent with dimension kept it from coming back.

    God speed.

Looks like some sort of barnyard grass. You need Mesotrione and two different apps in the fall. Then start your springs with a Prodiamine (pre-emergent ) app

Depending on the type of lawn you have, you could try Outrider Herbacide.

  9. Icutthemetal

Plypho with a paint brush directly on the leaves

  10. There’s not that much of it. See if u can pull it out by its roots. Which will stop it from regrowing in those areas and spreading.

I’m surprised tenacity doesn’t eradicate this weed grass. Not sure if it’s the same weed but it worked well on my lawn

  12. Far_Veterinarian5349

Pull it by the roots if that’s your only spot and you don’t have an entire yard full..always worked well for me. Good luck☺️

Nobody knows. I feel like this same weed gets posted every week and there’s a million different answers.

    You need MSMA, Target 6. I tried XLR8…it’s so-so.

MSMA kills crabgrass, dallisweed very fast and will not kill grass. Sure it will yellow it but grass will be fine. I tried all sorts of things then found Target 6, awesome product.

My god that’s a lot of chemicals for a lawn. No wonder the planet is dying

    are you me?

looking at those chems are like looking in a mirror of what i have in my garage…

    good luck!

I had that in my lawn and i spot prayed with ranger pro

Looks like Dallisgrass to me. You can download the app called “Picture This.” The icon is a picture of an all green flower and the app does a very good job identifying plants/grass/weeds. If it is dallisgrass, then msma is the only thing that will work on it other than using glyphosate which will obviously kill your grass along with the weeds

I have something very similar in my yard. My research says quackgrass. Next to impossible to get rid of without killing the neighboring good grass.

  20. Such_Beautiful8133

I’d use a plant ID app and take a couple pictures to be sure.

Cover it with a clear plastic tarp, the heat will kill the J grass and the seeds, you can also put a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard, this will have an effect on the other grass that is near it as well.

  22. Happy_Structure4570

Celsius herbicide for the win if it’s Johnson grass

  23. hugeace007

Glyphosate with a weed wiper to save the grass around it.

  24. Ok_Affect_2293

I dunno what that is but it’s not crab grass

  25. crevasse2

I’ve found that if I mow it, it goes away. For a while. We have a pact.

  26. Firm_Comparison_1931

Johnson grass and I’d try to hand weed out make sure you get the root system out.

  27. AbbreviationsNo3701

I’ve had similar grasses and could never get a good answer. As you see there are many opinions on what it is.

Best bet is to attack it with a foamer with roundup (gly):

    https://www.greenshootsonline.com/products/package-small-foam-herbicide-dispenser

It will be a bit tedious but you will severely limit collateral damage and knock all that out nearly 100%.

I did a full Reno few years back and anytime new unwanted grasses pop up I just hit them with the foamer and don’t worry about getting an ID.

    Good luck!

Just drink those bottles instead of absorbing them over time through your skin. That will fix everything.
