What’s the plug material?
In college, we used a similar idea for tomatoes in aeroponics for a nutrient study. Our problem was the foam plugs we used absorbed the nutrient solution and caused salt burn on the stems. The solution was to coat the bottom of the plug with silicon vacuum grease (nasty stuff).
