LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Think Ability Community Garden released 40,000 ladybugs during their annual Ladybug release.

The Community Garden let go of the ladybugs earlier this evening.

Everyone has heard of ladybugs, but what most people don’t realize is that they eat thousands of plant-eating aphids in a lifetime.

Aphids are tiny insects that could overrun a garden in a short amount of time if left unattended.

In order to help get rid of those pests, Think Ability is releasing them.

The ladybugs arrive cold and in hibernation. When released, they warm up and fly into the garden.

The Community Outreach Director, Stacey Weddington, gave more insight into the community garden.

“This is more than just a beautiful garden,” Weddington said. “This is giving life not only to produce and flowers and herbs, and things, but it’s creating a more independent life and a paycheck for people we serve and support.”
