I used PictureThis to identify this as portulaca umbraticola when it first germinated. I didn't think there was any way it would be accurate; it was barely even a plant. But I watched, cautiously. I believe it has a few common names–moss rose, wingpod purslane. My mom just always called it portulaca. I wish she were still around to see it.

  1. Is it purslane? I believe portulaca has thinner, pointy leaves

TIL it’s edible and used in soups and salads!

I get portulaca every year, from Lowe’s, for my container. The colors are amazing. The yellowist yellows, carmine red. This year, there’s a pink. OMG. it’s pink.

It is such a nice plant and yours is beautiful! I have several pots with various colors, but the House Finches are pulling the leaves off. Between the birds, squirrels and heat they are struggling to flower. Some of my tags say Portulaca and some say Purslane. The leaves look like Purslane to me.

I used wheelies to move my heavy clay pots in for the winter but now I have almost completely switched to fake terracotta because they are so much lighter. My back alternates between the left side and the right side going out as I fast approach 80. If it weren’t for the chore of moving them, I would love to stick with terracotta and glazed.

Nice portulaca, btw. Wish my mom was around to see it as well.
