Kentucky blue grass/fescue blend laid last summer. Mine looks like it’s dying. How can I revive?

My guess is that they are fertilizing and watering more than you? Did you fertilize last fall after the sod was in? What have you done so far this spring?

I don’t know what your care routine is, but my years looks greener than my neighbors. I use Scott’s products that does include fertilizer. But definitely ask him. He has the same soil and environment as you, so he would have better tips that strangers that live in different regions.

Do you have a sprinkler system or otherwise make sure it gets regularly watered (particularly when it hasn’t rained and/or when daily temperatures rise above 85-90)?

Do you cut it tall (minimum now in the summer should be around 3”) and frequently (never cut more than 1/3 of the blade)?

    Do you fertilize?

Edit to add: I have the exact same blend of cool season grasses. These are the three steps to success with Kentucky Bluegrass and fescue.

If one person eats junk food and the other eating nutritious meats and veg, which is healthier?.. They are feeding their lawn nutrients

How short are you cutting your lawn vs. how tall are they cutting theirs? KBG/TTTF should be 3.5/4” in the summer heat.

I’m just guessing, but two things hit me:

    1) Neighbor is using fertilizer or perhaps extra water and you aren’t.
    2) Neighbor is growing the part that’s green, and you are cutting it off. That is, you’re cutting too short.

If I were to cut my grass right now from 4” down to 2.5”, it would go from looking lush green to mostly dead.

How many of these kind of questions are posted a day!?!? Iron, NPK, WATER!!

    Fertilizer. Dethatch. Water. Regular mowing.

Malorganite I know it’s spelled wrong

Fungicide, iron, and nitrogen. This summer has been pretty wet so condition are ripe for fungice

  11. Water, fertilizer, letting it grow longer than you are letting it.

You might just be cutting yours a bit too low compared to them

  13. One yard looks well taken care of and the other looks neglected. Get a soil test and figure out what you’re deficient in and put it down. It’s summer time though so you need to be very careful about how much fertilizer you put down so you don’t roast your lawn.

The grass is ALWAYS greener on the neighbors side

Don’t cut more than a third of the length of the blade in one mowing, either. If yours was overgrown and you cut it short like that, it stresses the grass. If you let grow too long, cut a third and let it rest a couple of days before cutting more.

Maybe they’re mowing theirs higher? I prefer to leave my grass high so that it can overpower the weeds

  17. Looks like they fertilized and had better lawn and soil health. Now it looks like you’re un a but if dry spell and both of your lawns are drying out. Thanks to his thicker lawn and better lawn health, he has retained more moisture and the lawn canopy has helped keep the roots a bit cooler.

You can see his lawn is drying out too, but yours was so sparse to begin with that it looks really poor now. If temps stay high and it stays dry for another week, you’ll see his lawn start to turn as well.

    Ask your neighbor.

My guess is that he’s just better than you.

Hey man the grass isn’t always gree….. oh , I see.

My yard was in similar condition to yours! My neighbor and I had sodd applied around the same time (new build). Couldn’t get it to grow properly and again, looked just like yours.
This year I dethatched, applied turf builder and watered accordingly.
A couple weeks later my yard is dark green and thick! *Remember to not cut too low either.*

When I mulch in Midsomer, British, the clippings immediately turned brown near the ground and up close Inspection let me know that they are ugly and causing my lawn to look bad

More water and more fertilizer, if you want match your neighbors

    Cutting length,water,fertilizer

Cutting length and consistent watering seem to be the biggest

  25. flyhorizons

Watering and an iron-containing herbicide such as Fiesta, or Canadian-style Weed B Gon. The iron makes for a deeper, darker shade of green.

Height of cut is very important and can make all the difference. Mow on the tallest setting your mower will allow.

  27. Worried-Raspberry896

Because the grass is always greener on the other side.

  28. manwithafrotto

Have you tried maybe.. I don’t know, asking them?
