Hi, we had our cherry tree trimmed about 4 years ago, and this is the best batch we've had since then.
This fungus started growing winter 2024, and normally the birds are constantly eating the cherries, but this year they haven't been touched by the birds much at all.
I am abit worried it could be due to this fungus that is growing, are they still safe to consume?
Thanks for any advice in advance!

Yes. They should be safe to consume. However, while the fungus does not affect the fruit production system of the tree, it does damage its structural integrity which will, in the long run, affect fruit production. Wash the output thoroughly and check for damage. If it is not damaged or bruised, feel free to consume them.

The fungus should be removed. It is called “chicken of the woods” fungus. Or at least I think that’s what is shown in the image.

    Have a nice one.

  2. The fungus is eating dead parts of the tree – not living. Those cherries are perfectly safe.

You might want to check with an arborist or r/arborists about that fungus.
