Hi everyone,
For about a week now, my Monstera Albo has started browning fast on the white parts of the leaves. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Could it be too much sun, not enough humidity, or something else?

Also — does anyone have good tips to keep the white variegation looking healthy and avoid browning?

  1. I’ve seen other people mention silica. I just started using it on all my white variegated plants so I’m not sure about results yet. I have my albo in a west facing window and about 5 ft away from a 36 watt grow light for about 8 hours a day. But I’ve only had it a month but so far so good!

  2. I had a problem with browning tips, what helped mine the most was consistent watering and adding silicate powder every other watering, I use terra aquatica silicate. After that, the newest 10 leaves never got brown tips. I have mine under growlights 10+ hours a day on a south facing window with no direct sunlight. Northern Europe so winters are dark and the sun isn’t that harsh. I never spray my plants but have a humidifier on for a few hours a day during the winter.

Well, the cause of browning is usually because the plant is lacking nutrients/sun/water/anything else that’s not ideal. Reason being, white parts don’t help the plant at all, so it gets rid of it to preserve whatever it’s missing. I cared for mine very diligently, LOTS of morning till around noon direct sun, fertilize often, keep pole moist, etc etc. Now I think it’s rootbound, got some thrips and I just can’t be bothered to water it EVERY 3 friggin days… it gulps liters. Result, rapidly browning white parts, while it barely did so for a year.
So the main thing is proper care. That being said, it’s still very hard to keep these plants pristine.

Lots of light! I do not use silica. I just use lots of light for 14 hours or more sometimes.
