Novice tree owner here. This big guy was covered in mulch and landscape fabric when we bought the house (pic 3 is after removing the fabric). I know the roots need to breathe, so I am trying my best to dig them out. Question is, am I digging too much root out? Last thing I want to do is cause any damage and risk it falling on my house. Thanks for any advice!

If you are trying to expose the rootflare, it looks good to me.

I wouldn’t go any more personally. That’s plenty.

You can snip the little crazy ones growing across the big roots and then maybe backfill a bit because you really don’t need that much exposed.

I would have stopped half way up

Nice, set that silver maple free! But never turn your back on one.

  4. That’s overkill. But you aren’t doing any harm.
