Does anyone ever sharpen a new blade? Finally got some good color but it’s hidden with a haze caused by the white tips. Old blade did the same even after sharpened. Possible lawn mower rpm issue?

Or possibly walking too fast or wet grass.

  2. Not sure that’s any issue. Looks fine to me. If there’s cut, there’ll be scar.

I sharpen new blades with my angle grinder and a flap disc. My grass tips do not look like that. Make sure the grass is dry though.

Was sorta wondering the same. Just ordered a new Oregon blade, but I’ve read to just use it, no need to do anything to prep it at all 🤔

Someone has to ask, might as well be me. It’s on the correct way yes?

I had my self propelled mower serviced this spring. I thought I was happy to see he installed a new mower blade. As my grass has been growing and filling in, I see areas it looks like I skipped and a real unevenness. I took the blade off and there was a bevel, but the edge felt rounded and was coated/painted like the rest of the blade. It’s USA made and he says the manufacturer recommends using it like this and it will cut fine. It now has a wider bevel and a sharp edge and my yard looks 100% better. I won’t put a new blade on again that isn’t put on the grinder or filed first.

Yes, always….grinder and 120 flap to remove the paint and clean up the edge. I do this monthly and sharpen as well as needed.

In some other post I saw it mentioned that new blades aren’t necessarily sharp on purpose for safety reasons or something like that.

Brand new blades often come not sharpened for safety reasons.

Edit: Oh I’ve never gotten award before. Thanks, person!

  10. what kind of grass is that? I thought it was a pile of pine needles at first

Are you cutting a lot of grass? Like more than 1/3 of the plant? I shoot for 1/4 of the plant to make sure I’m not bogging down the mower.

And yes, I sharpen new blades. They’re never sharp.

The motor may not be getting the proper RPM.

Edit. Sorry, didn’t read your post; you suggested this. Swapping out the air filter and carburetor might be a cheap fix, and a 5-minute how-to video is all you’ll need for expertise.

Are you running the mower at the recommendation blade speed. Just a thought 🤪

Slow down when you mow. High RPMs, low ground speed.

New does not equal a good sharpened blade.

In my opinion; New blades still aren’t sharp.

    Just because they’re new doesn’t mean they’re sharp. 😒

lol these are some strong looking blades

  19. Everybody is talking about sharpening and there is a lot of good advice, but don’t forget to check the balance of your blade as well. Especially to new guys also know when your blade can know longer be sharpened

Side note… it’s a cool picture. Finally an appropriate shot. Most take these pictures from across the street.

I bought a new blade and I can’t get the old one off, even with a blade lock.
Tried wd-40 on the nut and still can’t break it loose
