We've got a rather large silver maple in our tiny back yard. I just cleaned a bunch of suckers out of this crotch area and noticed a fair amount of rot. Dug out as much as I cared to. Is there anything I should/could do to prevent water from continuing to collect in this area?

Tie a piece of large diameter rope higher up on the tree and leave the end in the crook. It will wick the water out of the hole

I don’t know about maples although I have several with various confugurations. But I have an oak that definitely collects water and it has been ok for decades

Water is fine, leave it there. The tree won’t rot

Spray expanding foam. I’ve used it on oak trees and persimmons in the past.

A place for ants to build and eat the tree.

A little cornstarch or gold Bond and you’ll be good to go for that crotch /s

It’s hard to avoid a damp crotch man. Maybe toss a little baby powder in the soak it up
