A Liverpool bar is asking guests for pints of blood in return for beer. Sub Rosa, located in the city’s Baltic Triangle district, promises the request is for a very good cause.

Sub Rosa, from the team behind the much-loved Botanical Garden, opened its doors on Kings Dock Street in the summer of 2021. The venue features a large events space, with room for up to 30 people, seating areas made from converted trolleys and a bar made from a shipping container.

In an Instagram post shared today, Sub Rosa told guests it will deliver a “pint 4 pint” exchange for anyone who donates a pint of blood to a donation centre.

The post reads: “Blood donation is super important and can save a life so we intended to do PINT 4 PINT – you make a blood donation and you get a pint on us next Thursday but it’s 27 degrees and that’s frozen daiquiri weather so it’s evolved. Anyway the premise is simple – give blood this week and come see us Thursday for a frozen one.”

Sub Rosa’s owner, Pedro Hunter, told the ECHO the exchange is an attempt to drive blood donations. The NHS has warned it is facing a “challenging” blood shortage after NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) analysis revealed an annual shortfall of over 200,000 donors needed to meet growing demand.

This National Blood Week (June 9 – 15) the NHS is calling on 1 million people in England to give blood – and help create the country’s largest volunteering force – to stabilise the nation’s blood supply.

NHSBT chief executive Dr Jo Farrar said: “Our stocks over the past 12 months have been challenging. If we had a million regular donors, this would help keep our stocks healthy – you’d truly be one in a million. Please book an appointment today, experience how good it feels to save lives, and come and do it again in a few months.”

Sub Rosa’s owner, Pedro Hunter, told the ECHO: “There’s no other reason behind what we’re doing than to get people to give blood. We’ve seen there’s a drive needed for donations so we thought we’d do what we can in the simplest way possible.

“Liverpool is a great city and always comes together when it’s needed so this is another way of helping those who need it. Donating is quick and easy and something most of us can and should do.

“Next Thursday is set to be 27 degrees so why not do it then. Hopefully, because we’re giving away a free pint to anyone who does make a donation, it drives people to finally do it. It’s always on people’s lists to get around to so hopefully this is finally the time.”

To claim your free pint from Sub Rosa, you must donate blood between now and June 19, and provide evidence at the bar, which Pedro said can be as simple as a photograph of you at your appointment.
