Titcomb’s Bookshop will host Jill Mays for a discussion on her book, “Nurturing Nature: A Guide to Gardening for Special Needs,” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, according to a community announcement.

The event is free, but registration is required. Interested attendees can register at titcombsbookshop.com/events or by calling 508-888-2331. Books will be available for purchase, and Mays will sign copies after her presentation. Those unable to attend can order a signed copy through the bookshop’s website.

Mays’ book provides guidance on starting a garden and achieving successful growth, particularly for individuals with special needs. Gardening has been shown to benefit physical, cognitive and emotional health, especially for vulnerable populations like the neurodiverse or physically challenged, who are at a higher risk of isolation and stress-related illnesses.

The guide offers step-by-step instructions for creating a garden, from a small pot of flowers to a large plot of land. It also includes specific activities, adaptations for special needs and reviews of recent findings on the health benefits of gardening.

Mays is also the author of “Your Child’s Motor Development Story,” which emphasizes the importance of sensory exploration and natural play for healthy development. With a background in occupational therapy and sensory integration, she has conducted workshops and provided consultations for parents, educators and health care providers. Over the past decade, Mays has focused on gardening, working with farmers and developing children’s garden programs. She currently leads a garden group for special needs adults.

Titcomb’s Bookshop is located at 432 Route 6A in East Sandwich.
