I recently learnt cutting the bud will split it at top and encourage growth.
What precautions to take while cutting? When is right time/season and what is the right height?

Also my plant leaves are quite dry/rough. I see many other plants/pictures with lush green, shiny leaf, what do I do for such healthy plant?
Most important, it has not shed a single leaf since I bought it in last September. What causes leaf shed? We had got another for a friend at the same time which shedded all leaves.
I on inly watering it once a week, no plant food yet. It gets direct sunlight for 4-5 hours in morning.
