TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Shawnee County Extension Master Gardeners are raising awareness during Kansas Pollinator Week.

According to a press release from the Master Gardeners, Kansas Pollinator Week 2025, June 16 through 22, is a celebration of the vital role that pollinators play in all of our lives.

At the request of SCEMG and Monarch Watch, Governor Kelly will be signing a proclamation tomorrow, Wednesday, May 28, designating the week of June 16 to 22 as 2025 Kansas Pollinator Week.

Essential creatures, including bees, butterflies, moths, bats, beetles, and hummingbirds, are behind the food we eat. Agricultural economies, the food supply, and the surrounding landscapes would collapse without the actions of pollinators.

Many pollinator populations are in decline due to a loss of feeding and nesting habitats, pollution, the misuse of chemicals, disease, and changes in climatic patterns.

The mission of Shawnee County Extension Master Gardeners (SCEMG) is “Improving our Community Through Horticulture.”

Pollinator Week is an opportunity to share research-based educational information with the public on the importance of pollinator conservation and what they can do to support our pollinator friends through a variety of venues.

Throughout the week, SCEMG will be posting new information each day on its Friends of the Shawnee County Extension Master Gardeners Facebook page.

They will sponsor a wildflower walk at Grant Bradbury Prairie on Monday, June 16, at 6:00 p.m.

The following day, Tuesday, June 17, they will be partnering with the Topeka Zoo for a Make Your Own Wildflower Seed Bombs event from 10 a.m. to noon at the Prairie Pollinator Garden at 1740 SW Western Avenue.

Then on Wednesday, June 18, they will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the establishment of the new Native Plant Demonstration Garden by Dole Hall on the Washburn Campus.
