Pupils at the Isle of Wight’s St Thomas Catholic Primary School have planted strawberries and pumpkins in their shoes.

The unusual gardening project is part of the ‘Chelsea Comes to Carisbrooke’ initiative, which encourages the community to create plant displays using unconventional containers.

The children’s shoe planters now line the school path.

“Gardening supports a wide and varied curriculum and it is great the children are involved in a local community festival.”

The children’s display, along with others, will be on show around Carisbrooke until May 25.

The festival will conclude with an open garden event at The Dairy, 196 Carisbrooke Road.

The garden, located next to the school, will host the event from 2pm to 5pm, with teas provided by the Friends of St Thomas’.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the school.

The community is encouraged to come along and support the children’s green-fingered efforts.
