This week’s garden tour is all about looking ahead! We’re saying goodbye to the tulips for now as I relocate them to rest and rejuvenate for next year’s display. I’ll also be sharing some of my favorite garden design tips for using spring-blooming alliums like Globemaster to create structure and visual interest. And get ready for a burst of summer color! I’ll show you the newly planted supertunias, the promising seedlings for the cut flower garden (zinnias, strawflowers, gomphrena, china asters!), and my hopeful dahlia tubers. It’s all about planning and planting for continuous beauty in the garden! Are you ready to get your bloom on? Let’s grow!

Hey guys, how’s it going today? Lots of changes happening in the garden that I’m going to be showing you. I pulled all of the tulips from the tulip gardens. They were all done blooming. Uh well, ex with the exception of Peggy Wonder, but they were all done blooming. And I want to make room for my Dalia. And I want to ensure that I get the same tulip garden next year along the uh wall that faces out into the valley. So, I pulled all of those tulips as well, and I moved them down in that lower area that I mentioned to allow them to, you know, brown out there. Give them some time to be in the ground and hopefully they’ll come back next year. We’ll see. Uh, you know, only time will tell. Let me show you around, show you some of the changes, and talk about what’s been going on this week, cuz it’s a lot. So, what a difference a week makes. I mean, how much has this view changed? Remember all the tulips? They’re gone. I pulled them all and I replanted them where I said I wanted to plant them. So, you might, if you’re new here and you didn’t see my prior garden tours, I’ve been talking about it for a few weeks now what I wanted to do with my tulips because some tulip varieties come back, some don’t. And this tulip garden was so epic this year. I want to do it all again next year. So, I want to make sure those tulips come back. So, I’m just going to replant the whole bed. So, in order to do that, I pulled the tulip bulbs that I had in there because I want to give them a chance to come back if they’ll come back. So, we’ll see. So, what I did was I have another bed down there that I’m starting to plant up. And I move them all. I think there’s like I think I might have moved almost 700. Wasn’t a full 700 like I had originally planted because I didn’t move them all. Um, but it was it’s probably about 650. It was a big big big big big job. Anyway, this bed’s changing. Uh, so I was thinking I was going to move all of these pansies and swap them out for patunias, but I decided to kind of hold off doing that. I’m going to sit with these for another couple of weeks. As it starts to get really hot though, I will pull them and swap them out. I do love having a patunia border in here. love planting the super tunias because they’re self-cleaning. You don’t really need to dead head them and they look good pretty much all season long. Uh mine last year lasted well into fall and I wound up keeping them and not replacing them with pansies, which I usually like to do in fall because they lasted so long. They look so good, so why change them? And now I’m thinking the same thing with the pansies. But I’m going to keep them in here for probably like maybe another week or so and then I’m going to swap them out. I will move them to like the backyard in total shade and hopefully get like another month out of them, but as it starts to get hotter here, I mean, they just won’t make it. So, uh, what’s blooming right now? My Globe Master aliums. I love them. They’re one of my favorite spring flowering bulbs. Tulips now my have become my favorite and so these are probably a close second. I just love those purple spheres. They’re so like magical in the garden, aren’t they? Little tip about growing them though. If you decide to plant them, I personally love them planted in mass. I think they look better when they’re when they’re several as opposed to just having like one or two. But the foliage doesn’t usually look all that great. So, they tend to look a little bit tattered as you can see. So, it’s a good idea to plant some perennials or annuals or something in front of them so you’re not just kind of looking at that tattered foliage. Boy, we are a lot of planes going overhead. Sorry. Sorry about that. Must be a busy day heading over to Newark airport. As an aside, I just want to mention that this whole wall was planted with those Globe Master aliens, but sadly something happened to them. My guess is a critter dug them up, but I don’t know. But I did have several planted on this side as well cuz I wouldn’t just plant one side. Uh but you know, it happens. What are you going to do? Does kind of bother me a little bit, but it is what it is. So, I did get all of my Zenia seedlings planted. I not all of them are in this bed, but there are several different varieties. I really honed in on pinks like I did last year. I really liked all the variation in color of pinks, so they’re in here. I just planted some uh salvas and I have some agistachies that I planted. Really excited about that. Uh as we move into the season, I’ll I’ll grab the plant tags and talk a little bit more with you about them. But for now, just know that I have been planting cuz it is planting season. I’m so excited. Also just planted Gamrina Truffle Pink in here. One of my favorites. It’s the first gamrina I ever grew and inspired me to grow more from seed, as did my friend Bethany over at the at uh the Chicago Gardener. She had inspired me to start them from seed and because I loved the truffle pink so much, I decided to start them from seed myself. I am not I did not plant those in this bed here. I did plant them down in Flora Lane. But in this bed, I have truffle pink. Love, love, love them. I grew them two years ago and they looked so good in the border along here that I planted them again last year, but unfortunately rabbit got to them. So, they didn’t really look so good last year. So, I’m trying it again considering I do not have a rabbit problem this year. Why? Because of my fox. I have a nice little fox family that lives around here. It was under my uh cottage, but it has since moved on. But I know she’s still around because we’ve seen her hunting around on the ring, you know, circle of life. I’ve also got several perennials starting to fill in here. I know I’ve got some flocks, some cone flowers, achilia, one of my favorite fillers for cut flowers, and uh really a bunch of others. As they come in and grow and bloom, we’ll talk a little bit more about them, but just know they’re in here. Really loving this border this year. You know, it does this does really bother me, but what are you going to do? I mean, something I think something got to the bulbs. Really sad that half the border is missing, but what are you going to do? So, anyway, moving on. Just to give you a little more of a lay of the land, I’ve moved my house plants outside. Honestly, the front porch is going to be a tour in and of itself because I have so many house plants out here. But, I loaded them up all along the house so that they don’t get any uh direct sunlight. This side gets a little bit over here. So, I did put some plants over there that I knew could kind of take it a little bit more. But I, you know, it’s jungle over here. It’s jungle over here. And I just moved them all outside over the last week. I would say a couple days ago. Uh, you know, I kind of got tired of trying to water them inside. Much easier to water them all out here with a hose. Uh, since I have so many. And, uh, given we’re staying above 50° now, it’s time. So, I moved them all out here. moved a bunch out in the zen garden. I’m still shifting some things around, but um so far so good. I mean, right? Isn’t that so fun? Look at all the plants. My hosta looks so good right now. I wish I could tell you what variety is, but I did not plant it. I really love the foliage on it, though. Look at that. Isn’t that gorgeous? My planter is looking really good right now. Sweetly, pansies and rise up lilac climbing rose. I will eventually plant that in the garden somewhere. Not exactly sure where, but I potted up a few in here and in my pots up there. And it looks pretty right now. So, I was thinking about pulling all the pansies and like I said earlier, I think I’m just going to kind of hold off for another week or so. Uh, give them a little bit more time to enjoy life and then I will eventually pull them. I am getting ready to plant my hanging baskets up there. Not sure what I’m going to do just yet, but uh it definitely needs something. I really just love to plant pink. You know, I was going to get Cascade pink angelonia, but I’m having trouble sourcing it. So, um I don’t know. I might have to go with a different look altogether. We’ll see. Also starting to flower in this garden, false indigo. Love indigo. It’s such a pretty cottage garden flower, isn’t it? Those really beautiful purple flowers. They just look so pretty by the porch. It did recede itself in a couple of spots. And I do like to leave the seed heads, so that’s probably why. Uh I just love that little extra detail after they flower. But anyway, it’s looking good. I bet you by next week, we’ll see those pretty purple flowers. And uh yeah, that this porch is going to this is going to go through some serious changes by next week. Before we head into the pot, let’s talk a little bit about the chain garden. Everything’s starting to fill in here really nicely. We’ve got pink profusion salvia. Isn’t it gorgeous? I love those pretty pink flowers. And it looks so gorgeous with the baby’s breath spyhea. That chartreuse foliage is everything. My aliiums blooming in the back. Bearded irises getting ready to go. And as I walk a little bit closer, you can see how the foliage doesn’t really look all that hot on the aliums, but the bearded irises kind of hide it a little bit. I do have I’m going to be planting some sunflowers along the back like I had last year. And I’ve got a bunch of different perennials in here. I’ve got some sedums, some tix seed, some flocks, I’ve got a hearty hibiscus, got my hydrangeanger, and I’ve got a limelight hydrangeanger over there. This bed’s really starting to fill in. It’s come a long way. When we first moved here a couple years ago, this was full of pacasandra. So, like this garden has seriously come a long way. I do have some seed starts in here as well. I planted a bunch of snapdragons. All right, so I’ve been working down here all day, so it’s a little bit of a mess, but you know, we’re just doing these weekly tours, and it is what it is. My bed over here, my kitchen garden bed, I love it. It has filled in so nicely. I started all of these cool seasoned vegetables and herbs from seed using the winter sewing method. And then I had bought a couple of flowers from my local nursery and just kind of tucked them in. I did dense planting this year and no regrets. The harvest has been wonderful. I’ve been coming out here every day and getting lettuce. I’ve just got so much out here. I’ve got cilantro, lettuce, uh different kinds of lettucees. I’ve got um some scallions and I’ve got chives and some pansies and margarm and I planted tomatoes in here and some peppers and I’ve got broccoli and dill and it’s just it’s just awesome. It’s it’s absolutely awesome. Biggest change I mean right since last week. If you’ve been following these tours, you know these beds were filled with tulips. This bed had a bunch of hyasins, which actually I just deadheaded them. I’m going to leave these ones in here and see if they come back next year. So, I planted my snapd dragons in between and did a border of gamrina around the outside. That bed now has been replanted with my dalas. And I have Peggy Wonder over there that I didn’t want to pull just yet. So, I planted some dalas in between the tulips. I’ll pull her when it’s all said and done. But for now, at least I got the dalas in the ground. So, I’m happy with that. I got all my zenyas in here that I wanted to plant zenyas, straw flowers, china aers, and I’m going to leave these daffodils and the tulips in there. Kind of give them a little test, see how they do. I kind of want to see whether it’s worth keeping them in or not. I have a feeling it’s not worth it, at least where the tulips are concerned, but I won’t know until I try. And gardening is one big experiment and you don’t know until you do things. So, I’m gonna try it. I did plant in between them, so I’m not really too worried about it. I’m going to let them brown out and die back and as my seedlings start to grow, it’ll kind of conceal all that. So, I’m not too worried about that. I’m I’m excited about the Dalia this year. I’ve got a bunch of different varieties. I really focus on a bunch of pinks, purples, lilacs, and a little bit of white. I It’s really going to be beautiful. You’re going to love it. Isn’t it amazing how much all this has filled in in just like a week or two? Like the ground is exploding with plants. I mean, I’m planting, but I had things already in the ground that are growing. And so, it’s just really been amazing. This weekend is Mother’s Day, and so I actually, this used to be a basketball hoop here. So, I want to I want my husband to get those bolts out, and I want to get a statue for her. I don’t know what kind of statue I want to get, but I’ll know it when I see it. It’s got to be tall. It can’t be much bigger than uh the base of that. And I want to be able to see it like from this bed. So, any ideas? Do you guys have any ideas of what I should put there? I just think it needs something. And so, I’m thinking a statue would be really cool. My selfwatering planter still doing pretty well there with my pansies and stock. Um I’m going to keep them for a little bit longer and then I’m going to swap them out for some uh warm season annuals. Uh but you know what? I’m really pretty happy with the bed. My Atlas roses and my Eden roses have all got buds in them. They’re getting ready to bloom. My Globe Master aliens in here are getting ready to bloom. So, that’s going to I think by next week I think we’re going to see them flowering by next week. So, stay tuned. Now, this garden has been a work in progress since last year. It was completely filled with Laapi. Like totally covered in Laipi. And I’m sorry for the mess here still. I’ve been planting all day. We do park a car here, so I just kind of like move some plants out of the way. But hey, this is real life. This is real life. Giving you a garden tour and it’s real life. I’m not done planting and I’m moving plants around and it is what it is. So, let’s talk a little bit about what’s going on in this border because there’s a lot. Look at this bed. I did a whole super tuna border going around. This is a mixed border. We’ve got theactum cotton candy. This is a still be dark side of the moon. Um I believe this is apple twist hookra. I’ll have to put I’ll pop it on the screen for you. I don’t remember offhand, but I’m pretty sure it’s it’s called apple twist. Bunch of different patunias, which I’ll chat with you about in another video. Right now, I just kind of want you to see. I spent all day today planting, so I am quite honestly pretty exhausted. That is indiglo salvia. I’ve got a bunch of sedums in here. some manarda, agistachi, dlies, bunch of different hookeras and hookerellas. I shared a lot of these in a video last year from a plant haul with Proven Winners and uh you know they’re filling in great. They look really good. And so wherever I had holes, I planted some super tunias and I’m really loving how they look. And I actually had planted some flocks over there where the foxes were going in and out from under the uh the cottage and I thought they were gone, but I see that they’re coming back. So hopefully they’ll be okay. I did plant a bunch of liies in here. So hopefully they’ll grow and we’ll um have some nice looking flowers there. But uh yeah, everything’s really growing and filling in nicely. I I so love the foliage. I love the different textures. It’s so gorgeous. So gorgeous. We’ll detail a little bit more about this bed in the coming weeks, but spent the day planting it today and uh I’m pretty happy with where it’s going. And that’s it you guys. Thanks so much for joining me in the gardens today. I’ll see you in the next video. Enjoy a beautiful day.
