I just bought my first orchid today. I was hoping I could get some advice on caring for it?

what a pretty orchid! here’s a few tips:

    * Light: Bright, indirect sunlight (no direct sun! – it burns leaves).
    * Water: About once a week – let the roots dry slightly between waterings.
    * Humidity: Likes humidity – mist occasionally or put her in the bathroom during and after your shower.
    * Pot: Use a pot with good drainage (plastic orchid pots with holes are great and most already come in these – no need for a repot, usually).
    * Soil: ideally special orchid bark mix – not regular potting soil, but yours already has it, just a heads up when/if you repot.
    * Fertilizer: not completely necessary but orchid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks benefits greatly (half strength is fine).
    * Temp: Prefers 18–24°C (65–75°F); no cold drafts.
    * Air: Needs airflow – don’t crowd it with too many plants.

  2. I lost my first ever orchid before i knew any better because the one i got had a huge soaked nursery plug in the pot that i had no idea about and it slowly killed it . So now when i get them i always check right away

Just a heads up, this is artificially colored. So when it reblooms the flowers will probably be white.

  4. I water my collection by pulling out the inner pot and dunking the entire thing in water. Let it soak for a few minutes and then put it back. I do this once a week and i havent had any issues with watering. Do try to keep water from pooling where the leaves meet if you do this, it can cause the leaves to rot.

The flowers will die back eventually, this is okay and not a sign that anything is wrong. No bloom lasts forever. If you keep it happy it will bloom again, usually around fall or winter. When all the flowers have fallen off and the stem is dried out you can clip it off near the base and toss it. Another will grow from a different spot.

Look for orchid fertilizer next time youre out shopping, it will help it rebloom. If you ever need to repot it make sure to use the special orchid bark mix and not potting soil.

Congrats on your first orchid! 🎉 They’re stunning and surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. Bright, indirect light, minimal watering (every 7–10 days), and never let it sit in water—those are the golden rules.
