This year, I updated our backyard completely from scratch. There was absolutely nothing but dirt, dust, and 3/8″ minus red and pink rock all over the yard. It is fun to look back and see how much has changed since December, only 5 months ago! This was a total transformation, done completely by myself with a little help from my husband and son, sometimes! Watch this quick video for some ideas on how you can transform your desert garden from dirt to blooms quickly and easily.

This video doesn’t even include changes I’ve made to the western part of my yard. More to come in the fall, when it is cooler!

Changes included:
1. Installing a dry pour concrete walkway with pavers
2. Installing a dry pour concrete patio, covered with decking from IKEA
3. Mulching our arborvitae tree
4. Creating three garden areas
5. Planting 6 roses in ground, 7 in containers
6. Planting 2 bougainvilleas
7. Planting sweet alyssum, marigolds, zinnias, sunflowers, and succulents
8. Solar walkway lighting
9. Shade fences to give my roses afternoon shade

I garden in Zone 9B (Arizona), where growing beautiful roses, moringa trees, and other desert-hardy plants is totally possible—even in the heat!
