I have these young plants in self watering pots with acrylic yarn, see picture. I would love to just keep the reservoirs somewhat full to about an inch and keep the wick process going the whole time. Refill and forget. But I’m afraid even that would be too much and perhaps I should put in just a couple tablespoons of water and let it dry out before I put more in.

I have a pretty good layer of perlite in the bottom of each of these and then African violet soil mixed with perlite 50-50.

Wick watering works and makes it so easy!
You can absolutely do it your way, letting it dry out a bit, but it’s not necessary according to my experience.
The capillary action will keep the soil perfectly moist and not wet even if you fill your reservoir to just under the pot.
You did it perfectly with the perlite mix.
Try filling it up and watch them. I bet they stay moist and happy. Fill and forget- yay! Don’t forget to add some diluted fertilizer. You might avoid algae growth with those dark pots- double yay! You got this!✨

The level of the water in the outer pot should be below the bottom of the inner pot for the wicking process to work properly
