Overseeding, watering, and fertilizing will get this area back to perfection.
Now, there could be soil issues, a big root under this patch, heavy traffic, etc but I’m working off very limited context.
I’d try what I shared and dig deeper if needed.

I think the brown blades we see here are dead, not dormant, grass. Gently rake it and see if it comes right out. If so, rake out all the dead grass, water and fertilize to get what you have growing better.
In the Fall, throw some top dressing, spray tenacity and over seed.

good candidate for aeration, overseed, and thin compost layer for soil amendment.

Probably just the stolons from last year , do you let it grow long before winter ?

Need sustained heat to bring grass back as well as rain water and fertilizer.

Looks like Zoysia. If so keep it mowed and it will spread and grow thicker as the summer heats up.

A good raking may help to remove some of the dead grass and allow new growth to come in.
Things may change from season to season, especially in Toronto (later springs happen). Wouldn’t really sweat it unless it’s looks like this in 2-3 weeks. At that time still rake, throw some seed down, and water every to every other day.
