Five years ago, I bought this cactus, put it in a cup, and forgot about it. My kids were off and on watering it. The wide part with the dead on top used to be taller with a glued on flower. It has since…spread out? It's been kept indoors, watered every few months, away from the windows, with medium to low light.
I read about repotting it on /r/cacti and the pot and soil to use, but I'm trying to figure out if I need to put those root bits under soil? Or should I let it go? I'd like to save it and it's mostly green. TIA

Still green is good!! You might need to chop and/or chop and prop due to the etiolated parts — the super skinny tops may not be able to hold up new growth! But also I am still working through a similar situation and am by no means an expert, so I’ll let the experts actually give advice haha
