But yes, remove them. Probably an old flower bed or garden.

Railroad ties. They put up a lot more effort to remove than it looks like they would. Dig, pry, dig, pry, chop…

Looks like railroad ties. If so, be prepared to have to dig down several inches and deal with a large piece of wood.

That is going to be a major chore. I would seriously consider grading them under.

Dump sand, level, straw & seed. Hell of a lot easier than digging up railroad ties.

It marked something at one time. Property line, flower bed, swing set. . . Maybe a neighbor remembers. Pull them out, but i would discourage burning as they probably have some preservative chemicals in them. Good season to plant seed!

Those are structural. Do not remove them or your lawn will collapse.

A pick ax should get it out with leverage. And a helper with another tool. Beers and pizza are good tools to use with helpers. Cheers!

Do you have a septic nearby? Maybe those were a barrier at ine time to keep cars back.
Yes, it typically takes “long exposure” for elevated cancer risk, but if you have gloves and a mask handy, it can’t hurt to wear them.

Those are railroad ties and they will continue to rot and collapse. Yellowjackets love to build ground nests in them, I had some and got swarmed cutting the grass late season when they go into kill mode. It can easily send you to a hospital. They will be a risk until you rip them out and backfill with soil.

Gonna be so satisfying when you get the shovel under there and prop it up. There’s probably a whole subreddit for that kind of thing if you’re into it.

Don’t burn them. Wear PPE if carrying or sawing them. https://wwwn.cdc.gov/TSP/ToxFAQs/ToxFAQsDetails.aspx?faqid=65&toxid=18
