Zone 6a i I am not sure if my landscaper is taking me for a whirl, and I am a newish homeowner with too many projects to do it myself He patched a few square feet of lawn after digging and leveling the areas. The result is that the patch sits about 1-2 inches off the ground level. He said this will settle soon with rain and watering and it will look flush. I think it's ridiculous and he is trying not to have to dig out more dirt. Should sod be installed flush with the ground, or slightly above so it settles? And even if it's supposed to be higher, is this too much?

It’s possible the soil underneath is just not compacted. In that case, yes the sod will eventually settle. But if this is AFTER compacting, then it’ll take years to level out. Maybe never.

My backyard(seeded grass) and my front yard(sod) are not level yet after 3 years..
You can try putting thin layer of topsoil and try to gradually bring up the other areas up and wait for the newly sodded area to settle..

  3. I checkerboarded my side yard to save money. After 3 years, it’s somewhat level. If you pay attention, you can find the low spots. Since this is one big spot, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Ugh u wouldn’t be happy with this. I would have him pull the sod up and dig Down song to make it level with the existing yard and then use and make sure the sand and topsoil to smooth the edges

I would not leave it like that. Just fix it yourself. Scrape half an inch off dirt off and put the lawn back down

The new sod should be level with the grade of the surrounding turf. Depending on how low you mow, the sod may get scalped. Also may cause surrounding areas to get soggy, which can lead to disease.

It will never level out. If anything it should be lower so you can eventually fill it in to get it perfectly level.

I still trip in my sod patch the landscaper put down, it won’t level out for a long while

  9. This is the lawn equivalent of trying to copy/paste from a PDF to word

It will but it will take a long time make sure you keep it well hydrated. It would have been better to level with a mixture of sharp sand and top soil and seed it.
