Its incredible tasty! But you need thick gloves, cause they have these fine needles on their skin which are annoying on your hands. With gloves you can just take them and break them of by rubbing them in your hands or directly peeling them with a knife. Or I also like to just directly at the plant, still attached peel the skin with a knife and just take it ready to eat of the plant with your hands, no gloves needed, but not for transporting, just for eating in the moment

Sure is! And good too

All cactus fruit is edible! Not all cactus is edible tho. I recommend thick gloves or a pair of tongs/pliers to avoid getting glochids in the skin, (tiny little spines you can hardly see but OHMYGOD are they annoying)
Then after you’ve collected a few roast the spines off with a torch or other flame, I wouldn’t recommend a regular lighter, as it’ll leave nasty carbon residue on it and that tastes like crap. You shouldn’t eat the skin anyway, cut it in half and scrape out the meat!
You know the fruit is ready by a nice dark purple color, these look like a variety of prickley pear, right?

One time my friend and I spent an entire afternoon picking prickly pear fruit and turning it into lemonade (the cactus version). It was a ton of work, and in the end I was too scared to drink it bc I didn’t want to risk a throat full of spines.
Yes it’s edible, but is it worth it? Idk

yes, dont grab it with your bare hands. burn the little hairy spines off, trying to just cut them off will likely leave a tiny amount behind and those tiny ones really suck. great when made into a jelly. the ones in the area i live in dont have a very sweet taste raw but ive heard other places have different taste. they are full of seeds that arent really chewable so imo your best off cutting those out or spitting them out.

You may wanna grab the ones that are at the back on your picture, the ones that look almost totally red/purple and that don’t have flower on them anymore. Also if they started to open a little bit that’s when they’re the sweetest but gotta grab them before birds or other animals get to them.
Easiest way to peel them is cutting top and bottom off and a line from top to bottom to remove the entire skin. Also be careful, if they’re really prickly sometimes they get thorns on the inside of the skin as well. I’m Mexican and grew up eating those things like candy! They’re delicious! (And yes, you can eat the seeds)

Yes, just watch out for the stinging needles. They’re small and sometimes hard to find once they’re on the skin. They don’t hurt, it’s more like a continuous annoying itch.

My grandma made prickly pear jam every year growing up.

Yes and so good. I’m allergic to it and still am willing to suffer the rash I get.
