First time top dressing with compost. All I’ve done is spread it manually and leveled with a leveling rake. Plan on going back over with a fine leaf rake or push broom (whatever works) to get more of the grass blades to stand up.
I bought enough to apply 1/3” to my yard… had it delivered and hope they just brought the correct amount.
How hard/easy is it to smother my lawn??

  1. Personally, I think that looks good. Good nutrients and cover

The only trick is to avoid suffocating the leaf blade. Generally, as long as the leaf blade can breath and get sunlight, it will keep growing.

I’ve seen people smother grass applying it too heavy. Overall looks good here. Soft rake if you need to as it settles.

If your whole yard looked like that portion on the left with thick cover then it would be smothered but this looks solid

  4. Looks good , maybe slightly heavy on the left side but that is ok as I’m sure you are trying to bring that part up a bit.

Water will show you where the spots are too high and you can go back over with the levelling rake or the broom as it works it way in. As the grass grows it will find its way out and settle in.

You did it right. Some water and heat and that grass will pop right up.

OP can you tell me about what kind and where you got your leveler?
