  1. Thanks for the video, very helpful.
I’m in Maryland and the bed I have for potatoes is fairly wet from the rain on Sunday night. Do you think the potatoes will rot or they’ll be ok?

  2. Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

  3. Thank you for the continued info. I have bought about 12 packets of seeds from you this year. So far so good.

  4. That's awesome! Thank you. I tried to find out last year which potatoes are indeterminate and determinate and you're right it's difficult to find that information. Thanks for the good information.
I have started some of your seeds inside , they have great germination and all are doing great.

  5. It doesn't go quickly at this stage but you will reach 750K. because you are the best channel for a different public. I thank you and wish you luck 💝 You disurve this.

  6. Yeah people often wonder and assume synthetic fertilizers are terrible and "Not organic",…how much you use determines whether it's harmful to the environment ie Phosphorous runoff. If they're grow bags, it should negate that. I use a mixture of Down to Earth and Jack's(sparsely in ground), works out beautifully.

  7. The lack of certainty when it comes to facts about gardening is kind of maddening. This is the third version of determinate/indeterminate potatoes I've heard today. Firts one, there's no such thing. Second, it determines the placement of the flowers (tip or along the stem) but not tubers. Third, it's real and determines the placement of tubers (but not the flowers/seeds?).
The multi-layered tubers of indeterminate potatoes has to be real since so many people say they observe it, but why isn't this issue settled then? I've never seen this phenomenon but I also don't know if any of the varieties I've grown are indeterminate, I've asked the seed potato growers but they were all just confused by the question, said there's no such thing or don't worry about it.

  8. I haven’t this before. Thanks for presenting this; it will be interesting to try it.

  9. Good video and tips on how to prevent the soil from closing in on the indeterminate potato.

  10. Your channel is so informative. Even though I live on the coast just south of LA, I have learned so much from your videos. You are an awesome teacher. This potato video taught me that I was planting the determinate potatoes incorrectly. That will not happen again.

  11. Great info! I recently saw a video where they made a potato cage out of wire but kept it above ground on top of their garden bed. Both of these are exciting methods Id be willing to try!

  12. I’ve used cardboard boxes as a container in the past and will try Ruth Stout method this year. As potatoes prefer acidic soils, do you advocate adding sulfur during planting? Thanks for all your interesting content where you are always experimenting.

  13. @therustedgarden How do you provide drip irrigation for potatoes in containers? This is my first year with drip irrigation.

  14. Gary, thank you for explaining the different growing methods foe determine and indeterminate potatoes. The question I have that to my knowledge has not been answered: How do I know which variety is Determinate and which is Indeterminate? I fly by the seat of my pants on this. Ty if you can give me an answer. 🥰

  15. You lost me at chemical fertilizer. Also your argument is weak. Water is a chemical? Water doesn't corrode and alter the natural biological makeup of your soil. But you know what does? All that garbage that your recommending people put in their garden. Nature will always know what it requires better than you ever will, so stop ruining your soil trying to make bigger veggies. There are dozens of nearly free ways you can boost the quality of your soil without using harsh chemicals. It just takes more work…

  16. Hi Gary Tony here, Another awesome informative video, it was great meeting you and your lovely wife Saturday in Knoxville TN at the Hilton lounge. As I said there love your format in the videos. Keep rocking the gardening.

  17. Hey Gary, nice idea and I've never seen anyone else use it either so you might as well claim it.😁
I'm guessing most commercial varieties are determinate? I only grow offcuts from store potatoes in large pots (lack of space)
They all seem to grow as I'd expect determinates would, but I'm definitely no potato expert.
    Great video. Cheers!

  18. Gary, now I'm confused. I watched 3 of you're videos yesterday in the parking lot of Home Depot 😆. It's not like I haven't watched them 1000 times before. 🎉 But I wanted to make sure I got the right stuff. I chose to do the double layer method. However, I used organic potatoes from Trader Joe's. So I'm not sure what they are. It's my 1st time planting potatoes. Hope it works. Thanks for the info!! Love your videos.

  19. Your cardboard rounds look just like ones l put around my tomatoes when l first set out,6 inches in the ground and 6 above ground. They were the best protectors. I plan on growing potatoes this year by using 5 gallon tree pots with the bottoms cut out and filling with soil as the potatoes grow as you are doing. However lam surrounding these pots with straw packed around them in my 4x4frame.When the potato stem is at the top l will slide the plastic tree pots up and off.Over the years l have learned if the roots are in soil the potatoes will grow into the straw, and are very clean when harvested.

  20. It's crazy how many different methods and materials there are for potato growing but no real consensus after harvesting them for centuries.
I have to imagine that someone has found the most consistent strategy by now.
