I thought these were weeds until I realized they're growing a fruit! I didn't plant anything (and even when I do they never grow 🥲) and they're growing right by my front door! What is this (and how did it get here??)

Tomato, as for how it got there idk, bird poop? vegetable waste? Dropped burger?

It’s definitely a Solanum, though I’m not sure which species. It could be a tomato variety. Solanum seeds are often transported by birds, which could explain how it got there. Some solanum species are edible, some are toxic. Probably best not to mess with these unless someone knows for sure what this is.

I call them lightbulb tomatoes especially if they turn yellow

I used to live in Orlando. We went up north to Georgia for Christmas, and we stayed 2 weeks. When we got back, I looked through the picture window into the back yard. There, in our overflowing septic tank overflow, were the most beautiful, huge red tomatoes I had ever seen. They were about 7′ tall.
Our landlord was supposed to pump the septic tank 2 months before. Absolutely not. We didn’t eat them. This was in the 1990’s.

They’ll probably turn yellow when ripe. Very nice.

Looks like a yellow pear tomato. They volunteer everywhere! I’ve never planted one on purpose yet harvest pounds of them each year.

Pear tomato! Shaped like a pear, but is a tomato. Tasty!

Pear tomato. They are a sort of bottle gourd or pear shape. That cultivar is very good at random free plants.

Tomatoes are the easiest plants to grow, really. They’re super easy to germinate and will grow from seeds in dropped poo. I’ve also had a couple Lazarus plants that died and came back to life just to give me more tomatoes. Enjoy!

Just a word of warning- anything that looks like a tomato but you aren’t 100% sure is a tomato should be treated with much suspicion. There are too many species in the family that are toxic.
