I want to remove this giant silver maple that sits right next to my house. Is this even possible? What am I in for?

  1. Certainly doable. Pics can be hard to tell with size but that trees likely 3-4k in my area. It can go up quickly if access is terrible. Silver maples are prone to failure, so that close to the house may not be a bad idea.

had a maple taken down near house last year and was 2k. was bigger than this and between my house and neighbors like yours is. took crew a morning, no stump grinding or anything like that. in midwest.

Where is the driveway in relation to the tree, also how big is the road out front? A tree service company that has a crane is what you are probably gonna wanna shoot for. If a crane is an option, a company that has to outsource one is gonna cost more to cover it.

I would think twice. That’s a huge nice tree that would take many decades to replace!

How far from the road or driveway?

Removal with a crane could be a good option.

Bottom line. You’re spending the money either way. Less you spend on tree crew more you spend on repairs. That things a beast in a sketchy spot. Could also just prune and put in cables.

Can they drive up to it with a bucket truck? Silver maples have narrow branch angles and tend to split in high winds.

Please reconsider. If the tree is on the south or west side of your property its shade is undoubtedly saving you hundreds in air conditioning.
