This looks like a Samara seed (fruit?) But I'm not sure if there's any way to identify the tree it came from, seems like several create similar seeds.

The Cognac bottle is from a small producer so I'm assuming it was bottled on site in France. I'm just trying to figure out if it'd be at all poisonous considering there's some sediment at the bottom from it sitting/disintegrating in there

Looks very much like a Maple seed, but I wouldn’t be able to go further than that

  2. As the others said, it’s a maple seed. When they drop off the tree they float (or twirl) in the air and can travel quite a distance. Most likely it blew into the distillery and landed in the cognac or the bottle. It is not poisonous and probably won’t affect the flavor at all, so it would be a good excuse to negotiate a better price 🙂

Maple seed. We call them whirligigs where I live. It’s not poisonous. We’ll remove the seed and roast them or just eat the raw. That one may be infused with cognac and taste extra delicious.

The real question is how did you get it out without opening the bottle?

In Canada (at least where I’m from) we call samaras maple keys

Seems like the consensus is maple seed and should be safe. Thank you all!!

  7. For those wondering how this happens:

As during bottling, there is a filter between the tank and the bottling machine, the seed probably got in during storage before bottling.
