Thanks for growing with us!

It is COLD outside! Now that we have had consistent below freezing temperatures we know that our big leaf hydrangeas have gone dormant and we can begin protecting them for winter. We have several ways we are accomplishing this that we discuss in today’s video. We are also pruning back roses so they are less likely to be damaged in heavy snow. Lastly we are taking in the hoses for winter and happily completing our winter work.

  1. Good morning Eric and Christopher, it is cold here too in Northern Virginia and the gardening tasks continue, it is good that you tucked some of your shrubs in for the winter, it pays off but It is the one gardening shore I dislike🤣, have a great week and stay warm🌞

  2. I’m looking forward to seeing flowers on my Let’s Dance Sky View next year since deer chomped on it a few weeks after I planted it in early October. Perhaps I was complacent as I had already turned off my Orbit motion activated sprinkler 🤪. It’s the ONLY deer damage I had all season, RATS!

  3. Will the planket let the plant have some sun and moisture? Love you guys and your garden. Can't wait to see what winter brings us as far as videos go.

  4. Everything looks so tidy and peaceful! I'll admit I'm jealous of your snow! In zone 7 we haven't had good/normal snowfall for the past 10 years or so. I miss it!

  5. Love your garden, so nice even in it's wintery outfits. I am still concerned about the fairytrail hydrangea, not feeling like that beautiful planter is a good site in the longterm. I hope I'm wrong. Gosh I can't wait until spring

  6. l just love the snow!! Here in South Texas z9b-10 it's a rare sight. It's still in the 70s and 40s for the lows, and no rain. All my agaves, aloes and succulents are in full color and bougainvillea are gorgeous this time of year. l still love the snow! but l must admit it does look like a lot of work getting ready for the winter! Still your fall color and white christmas make a bit envious. l think you guys are great!❤❤😊😊😊😊

  7. I'm confused how is it not ok to completely cover the ground Hydrangea but you did on the pedestal? When you acidify the soil it's not a one and done. You need to do it many times to get the color change.

  8. Since Upstate's last frost date is usually Mother's Day, are you going to keep them on till early May? I do hate these wet snow. The wet snow and the high winds something makes me ask why I garden, but come summer, all that beautiful foliage and flowers bring back to why I garden.

  9. I added frost cloth last winter to my rhododendrons that I've had for many years with no flowers and voila this spring they were covered in flowers! I left protection on until spring Frost's done. Huge success!

  10. I love both of your attention to detail and enthusiasm for gardening. I think having a partner to collaborate with and bounce ideas off of helps a lot! I’ll be covering my Tuff Stuff Top Fun with frost cloth around pre made plant protectors. Thanks for the idea about using zip ties— don’t know how I thought I was going to secure them, lol! What’s the general rule of thumb regarding when to remove the plant covering? Thanks!😊

  11. The ‘Princess Plants’ have grown on ya 😉! I baby my hydrangeas here in NC zone 7b/8a too. In early Spring when we have a chance of late frost/freeze my yard looks like a Halloween party broke out in April with all the Hydrangeas covered & looking all ghostly. But I do have a concern on the Cascading Hydrangeas in the urn. If they’re a zone 6 & you’re a zone 6 I’ve always read they need to be 2 zones harder in containers for them to survive & live through the cold.

  12. Eric, we definitely remove our hoses for the winter season, but were zone 4 so its absolutely necessary. I imagine its a good practice for zone 6 as well, I saw Laura and Aaron from Garden Answer did recently pack theirs away; when in doubt copy Garden Answer lol.

  13. Brrr. Looks cold. Great job guys! Just a heads up, make sure to keep eye on the low tunnel with the frost blanket. Snow doesn’t slid off easily at times, accumulates and then smashes down flat. I have a couple on my raised beds and have needed to clear off the snow to prevent this from happening. Happy winter rest. Now go warm up and enjoy❄️

  14. I follow Seasonal Designs by Dawn. She did a winter container video a couple of weeks ago. She mentioned emptying her containers to avoid cracking. Her containers look similar to yours.

  15. I can’t wrap my head around covering the hydrangeas with a doubled garden quilt. They don’t need light in the winter?

  16. Here in Ottawa, Canada (zone 4), the only way our Macrophylla buds survive is by pinning all the stems to the ground until end of May (last frost). The tent method doesn’t work for us. I hope it does for you. It’s so much easier 🙂

  17. I love the landscape! Question, wouldn’t the pop up bags act like a greenhouse and actually warm up the plant, causing the plant to open up earlier in the spring? I’m just wondering…

  18. “Greedy for Blooms” 💚🌱

Love that all the garden is tucked in, and the tips you shared as to how and why. Thanks guys

  19. Hi I thought I caught a glimpse of a whitish garden hose installed in a pole. Can you share a link for it? Is it working well for you?

  20. My let’s dance skyview does not look like that. But I am in a 8a/8b climate. We did get freeze but no snow. I do see new growth but not like yalls. Also, I still have leaves. I feel better seeing yalls bc when the leaves started drying out I was very nervous. I just got mine this fall. One more thing, those landscape pin don’t pop out when the ground freezes? Mine did. Thanks for the videos.
