I bought my first house a month ago and currently this is my back yard. Not a blade of grass to be seen but plenty of mulch. It's currently too cold to plant, but as I'm in Atlanta that will change soon. Should I go towards seed or sod? Do it myself or hire a company? I have a small dog that loves his new yard, so I want some grass that can handle him. The yard faces the south so it should get plenty of sun. Where should I start? What kind of tools do I need if I do this myself? Previously owned apartments so I have nothing for yards.

Yard is roughly 1000sqft and that's after taking the concrete into account.

Thanks!

If its in your budget then go sod. Seed sucks. It is hard work. Your going to be fighting leaves while you are trying to get grass to grow. It can be done but its tough.

As for what grass to work I would see what your neighbors have that looks good. Fescue is hard to keep healthy in Atlanta without good watering but also seems to do a little better in the shade. If you go Fescue and seed you have to wait until fall pretty much.

I don’t know your shade situation, but if you don’t have a lot of shade, definitely go with a high quality Bermuda sod. The Bermuda will love the sun and is very heat resistant. 1000 sqft is very easy to mow and maintain.
