I have about 5 acres of pasture that I’m doing to plough and disc to flatten it out. You can’t tell, but because it was an old pumpkin patch it is VERY bumpy/hilly.

Whats the easiest way to get grass?

I plan to plough and disc it in March after the freeze and before it grows. Its snow covered now (in virginia)

Eventually I’d like to use some for recreational (kids etc) and some for animals (cows/chickens). I want grass to grow asap. When and how do I seed it?

Get your soil tested, local grain operation should know or have a agronimist or your county ag extension. See if you can get some manure on there before they plow, decide on best ground cover. All grasses/covers are not equal. Soil and zone will help you narrow it down, the ag guy will point you in the right direction. good luck!

This is the one time I’ll actually recommend KY-31. Throw seed down once your soil temps hit 45-50 and expect a lot of bare spots. Keep seeding throughout spring and then expect to over seed heavily in the fall again. It’ll be your best “bulletproof” grass with no irrigation and maintenance on that large of an area.

Have you tried rolling it when the ground is fairly wet to see that will take enough of the bumps out to save the cost of ploughing and seeding?
