  1. It snowed here yesterday, and we still have patches of snow on the ground (Sylacauga, AL zone 7A). My garden is still going from last year with Swiss Chard, Danvers Carrots, and parsnips in the ground. Yum, snow carrots. The cold weather converts the starches to sugar making them much sweeter.

Round one of seed starting is complete with Calabrese Broccoli, Waltham Broccoli, Dutch Cabbage, All Seasons Cabbage, Self Blanching Cauliflower, Burgundy Onions, and Yellow Potato Onions. I just sowed seeds for round two, Red Mammoth Cabbage, Jolene Tomatoes, Big Red bell peppers, and Sweet Banana peppers.

As room comes available, I’ll add seed starts for Lunchbox Orange peppers, Hungarian Yellow Wax peppers, Lipstick peppers, Cubanelle peppers, Corona di Toro peppers, basil, oregano, cilantro, dill, and Marjoram.

Round three will be leafy greens and flowers, Tokyo Bekana Mustard, Pak Choi, Swiss Chard, Romaine Lettuce, assorted leaf lettuce, Amaranth, Alyssum, purple cone flowers, marigolds, butterfly weed, butterfly flower, bachelor button, and cosmos.

Everything else will be direct sown, turnips, carrots, parsnips, Malaga Radish, golden beets, snow peas, shelling peas, and anything else I have left to plant. The final round of seed starts will be for cantaloupe, watermelon, cucumbers, and summer squash.

  2. We dug ourselves out of the snow these past few days and we're finally enjoying some sun here in the DFW area of TX! (8b). All my plants, (broccoli, kale, chard, carrots, beets, onions, garlic chives, collards) including my overwintered tomatoes and jalapeno peppers are outside enjoying 80+F direct sunshine! Just happy to SEE the sun again lol…

BTW, I had to cover my 4-tier greenhouse with extra plastic and a Planket to keep my pansies, violas and greens above freezing. Never got colder than 34F in there! So thankful!!!

  3. Thank you, Petrina, for all the cold weather crop tips. I have most all of these crops planted of all the ones I eat. I'm already growing peppers and have harvested some already and Im growing tomatoes and cucumbers. My cucumbers already have cukes on them pickle size. I transplanted these in my garden in November.

  4. I am heartbroken. I have followed you for 3 years and my raised be gardens (7) are not producing like yours. Broccoli is barely 12 inches tall. I am in 9b east coast of Fl. I planted them from seed in Nov. Also, you were putting seeds in trays. Do you have a video of how you put them under lights and the growing conditions? My dream is to get my beds look like yours. My soil ph is 6.5 -7. I am 66 and put so much effort into this but not great results. I do feed myself but would love to share with others. Thanks Petrina…

  5. Spinach need rich soil, compost and a ton of chicken manure.
If you are good at growing transplants you can put it is a lot of work for what you get.
And it takes a lot of space. And over head water.
A better alternative is lambs quarters AKA goose foot greens.
    They taste better.
The white goose foot greens is a weed that grows wild, here in Florida.
The stems are delicious like broccoli.
But there a bit of a leaning curve on when they are tender.
More to do with how old they are than how big.

  6. even though it's been a cooler (and earlier) winter for us in 9b it's been manageable so far. Fingers crossed no 20's this winter. I'm loving the lack of pests for sure! Thanks for the video with reminders of what to get started. Have my flowers, peppers and tomatoes started already but need to decide what winter squash and peas to get going.

  7. Yeah….I thought I needed no protection…and I never have UNTIL THIS PAST WEEK wiped out my young lettuces and brassicas….if they had just one more week on them I think they could have made it through

  8. Don't lose sleep over spinach. After 50 years of trying have only had one bumper crop a few years back with hydroponics on the back porch. Just tossed this years attempt. Oh well!!! But have had some volunteer tomatoes producing through January while my fall crop was not that great. Again. Oh well!!!! That's why I love gardening. Adds adventure to life.

  9. I placed my spinach seeds in a wet paper towel, wrapped in a foil and my seed sprouted. Try that I had luck with my spinach this year.
