Just moved into a rental. Photos a few months ago had this patch green. Over fertilised and lack of water I’m guessing. How do I save this ? Thanks in advance.
looks like a classic case of dormant buffalo grass mate, pretty common in aussie rentals. don’t stress too much – these lawns are tough as nails and can bounce back
first thing, give it a good soak. not just a light sprinkle, but a proper deep watering. aim for early morning or evening, about 3 times a week to start. you want the water to get down deep, encourage those roots to chase it
grab yourself a bag of slow-release fertilizer from bunnings – something balanced, not too heavy on nitrogen. sprinkle it lightly, less is more here. heavy fertilizing in hot weather can do more harm than good
might want to give it a light rake first to clear out some of that dead thatch. don’t go too hard though, just enough to let water and nutrients get down to the soil
give it about 2-3 weeks of this treatment. buffalo grass is pretty forgiving – seen plenty worse come back strong. if you’ve got any bare patches after a month, might need to chuck down some seeds, but let’s see how it responds to the basics first
keep the mower height high when it starts growing again. short mowing in summer is asking for trouble
