I want to do a water jar, but I’m a little spooked by unknown critters. Do you have to burp the jar or is it okay to leave sealed?
Looks really cool btw!

As long as you don’t get too much organic matter, you shouldn’t have to open the jar. But with this jar I was seeing what the limit was. We will see in seven months or so, if anything survives since I think I went a little overboard.

Neat! What’s that crawling up the side?

My kids did these from a swampy offshoot of the Wisconsin river as well! They love them. They are absolutely thrilled to see that almost 6 months later their moss and plants are still alive and they have snails and those same little water bug critters. Lots of little tiny moving things too.
I do periodically pop the top on mine just in case because this is the third time we’ve tried and the other 2 jars just turned to murky sludge after a few weeks. Good luck tho! Would be cool to see if I can just ignore the jars for awhile.
