Where are you located? Approximately of course

Looks like African lawn beetle
Edit – saw location, it’s definitely african lawn beetle – where abouts in SW WA?

Those look like ground beetles, which are pests killers. They look close to black beetles, but there are subtle differences, and them “running fast” is a clearer signal they are ground and not black beetles. They are fine, but if you have a woodpile/mulch/moss near, you will have a lot of them.
I personally like them since they eat the bad bugs and my kids like to play with them, but to each his own. I let them run around my pepper plants with impunity, lol.

Black beatle cultural practices, environmental route beneficial nematodes, alternatively any insecticide that treats black beatle.

Do you have lawn issues you can associate them with?
Look like dung beetles to me, but not that sure. Id assume these were benign at first.

If you’re asking for help with identifying a weed and/or type of grass, please include close-up photos showing as much detail as possible.
For grasses, it is especially important to get close photos from multiple angles. It is rarely possible to identify a grass from more than 5 feet away. In order to get accurate identifications, the more features of the grass you show the more likely you are to get an accurate identification. Features such as, [ligules](https://extension.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/styles/image_gallery_mobile/public/2024-03/180.png.jpg?itok=D5yNs0l8) (which can be hairy, absent entirely, or membranous (papery) like the photo), [auricles](https://extension.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/styles/image_gallery_mobile/public/2024-03/Grasses%20at%20a%20Glance%20Blog%20Pictures.png.jpg?itok=PLrWX4q-), any hairs present, roots, and stems. General location can also be helpful.
