Below 40°F (4°C): Most seeds will not germinate.
40–50°F (4– 10°C): Some cool-season crops like peas, spinach, and lettuce can germinate.
50–60°F (10–16°C): Perfect for seeding many cool-season vegetables like broccoli, carrots, and beets. Cool-season transplants do better at the higher end of the range.
60–70°F (16–21°C): A general range for transplants/seeding for both cool and warm-season vegetables.
70–85°F (21–29°C): Best for transplants/seeding warm-season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Crops preferring cool soil tend to flower and produce seeds (bolt).
Above 85°F (29°C): Germination can become sporadic for many crops, and high soil temperatures can stress plants. The process of bolting definitely begins for any remaining cool=season crops.
Above 95°F (25°C): Gemination may not occur and plants often drop flower or shut down fruit formation and production.

For cool season crops, I use this method: Go outside, barefoot, shorts, and tee-shirt. If your first thought is, "Dang! It's cold. I need to go back inside and bundle up," then it is too cold to sow seeds. If your first thought is, "It's a bit chilly, but okay," then it is safe to sow seeds. Note, this doesn't apply to people residing in south Florida. They can go outside barefoot, shorts, and tee-shirt year-round. 🤣🤣🤣

Nothing warms a cold December day like Gary’s voice talking about growing plants! ❤
Hi Gary. In raised beds wouldn't a thick layer of mulch help to keep the soil temps warmer by a degree or so? That coupled with a low tunnel or a couple layers of frost blankets. Of course, I am only thinking of cold hardy plants not warm season crops.
Unfortunately, you really can't rely on 'average' temperatures in a lot of places anymore. Our local climate here has gone completely haywire, and I just anticipate having to succession sow seeds so that I'll have something ready at the right time
All that is too much complicated for me
Do you have a farm
Why can't you take one of those long thermometers you use to check your compost pile and push it in the ground (about 4 inches) at several places and get a ground temp that way???????????? I'd rather spend $20 bucks and get a real reading??
This is super helpful! Thank you! Love that rain in the background….you could just let the camera run and just get the sound of the rain 😉.
