This new garden won’t grow itself! So I’m starting into my complete yard renovation while I still have a bit of good weather before the snow falls. With thousands of bulbs, 500 perennials, and a dumptruck of compost, all this garden needs is a good till and some woman power. Join me as I begin to tackle the massive job of creating a new garden, and a new life, for myself.

  1. Wow! I love the idea of a hedge of peonies! I’m so jealous! When I first saw you start digging I was also a bit jealous of your soil. It’s so nice and dark. Mine is straight clay and I thought I could amend as I go but it just hasn’t been enough so I started replacing about 1/2 the soil of each of my beds. Which means I had to dig up all of my perennials and bulbs. And and sift through the soil to find hundreds of teeny tiny baby crocus! What a crazy job! But next year it will hopefully be totally worth it. It is so overwhelming starting a new life but I just keep telling myself there is no right or wrong way to do it except to just keep chipping away little by little. At 52 I don’t have the strength and stamina I used to but I can still do it, it just takes a little longer. You can do this. I actually wish I had a slope to get creative with but everything is fairly flat.

  2. Just stopped by to say that Serena this new garden looks good on you. You just look so much happier in yourself despite the challenges you are facing. I have to say though my legs and back hurt just watching the first 4 barrow loads. Well done on so a huge effort, the garden will be so worth it.

  3. I was happy to see the four of you in this video. I wish Ian was able to properly say goodbye to the old fans of the channel who followed you guys since you were still in your old house– the house where the term "You Can't Eat the Grass" was coined, until you bought and established Red Roof Family Farm…. Anyway, I'm so so very proud of you, Serina. I love to see you smile. You are stronger than you think. Give yourself a pat on the back! 🙂

  4. Wow, great progress! Sam is hilarious – "I'm the dirt man, I love dirt" haha, I love that! Thank you for sharing, I look forward to seeing this transformation and learning from you! I hope your not too sore from moving all that compost, rest well!

  5. Can't believe I have been following you guys since sam was a baby. Now he is all grown up helping his mom out tears 😢

  6. When I get 15 yards it averages a ton a yard or 2200 lbs. a cubic yard (US) so brag to yourself it is 30,000 or 40,000 lbs. I do !

  7. You seem so much happier than before. Love to you. During these times when much in the world seems off and scary, working on the land is core to being and so steady and true. I gain from sharing your yard journey. Thank you for being you.

  8. So proud of you!!! Your garden is going to be beautiful! Happy Gardening and may you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  9. I have been depressed for so long now, 7 years, Since my sister died. As Autumn has come around, my funk is lifting and I’m finding myself lighter and a little happier each day.

Watching you on these videos has been tremendously helpful and encouraging and ultimately VERY *Inspiring*.

Thank you so much for sharing your very tender journey with us.

    You are a LIGHT.

  10. Great job Serina, i love the way you presents yourself by demonstrating to us the viewers the preparation of your new garden. Keep up the good work

  11. Thank you for creating such a fun and inspiring video. It was so good to be back at ‘work’ with you. Loved all the speeded up sections.

  12. Sam will grow up enjoying being silly yet getting stuff done. Excellent combination.
Every flower starts as a seed with potential, like we do. It takes time, care, doing goofy stuff, chores we don't really want to do, but slowly we bloom ourselves. You're getting ready to start doing your own bloom. The peonies will definitely be noticed by people who live blocks away.

  13. I resonated with what you said towards the end. The invisible work is the hardest. And it is all a metaphor. Planting bulbs and bare roots looks like planting nothing—and sometimes when I’m pressing a seed into the earth, I can’t believe it would ever really sprout. And then it does ❤️

  14. I wish I could go help you but I'm too far away from you. I missed your red roof farm 😢. You will do just fine here, but I know it is hard for you. Keep it up. You will get it.
